We believe for housing to be truly affordable then it must be in perpetuity. We understand that more important than architecture, are the democratic structures that shape how our urban spaces are governed. We conversely realize in order for local democracies to flourish they depend upon a stable physical foothold. 

We believe in order for the CLT’s internal democracy to thrive, its architecture must promote interaction, discovery, network building, and co-operation. The semi-private courtyard - a typology predominant in East Hollywood - creates a forum that actively encourages members to meet, share thoughts, build relationships. Shared communal resources facilitate this process further by granting space to the people and groups that need it. The communal kitchens, not only bring people together but provide an opportunity to start new business ventures or feed decision-makers in townhalls.

through cross subsidization of rent in combination with rent to own units we hope to arrest displacement already undergoing in the neighborhood. It is pressing that we establish more community ownership and democractic control of housing in Los Angeles.

Creemos que para que la vivienda sea realmente asequible, debe ser a perpetuidad. Entendemos que más importantes que la arquitectura, son las estructuras democráticas que dan forma a cómo se gobiernan nuestros espacios urbanos. A la inversa, nos damos cuenta de que, para que las democracias locales prosperen, dependen de un punto de apoyo físico estable.

Creemos que para que prospere la democracia interna del CLT, su arquitectura debe promover la interacción, el descubrimiento, la construcción de redes y la cooperación. El patio semiprivado, una tipología predominante en East Hollywood, crea un foro que anima activamente a los miembros a reunirse, compartir pensamientos y entablar relaciones. Los recursos comunes compartidos facilitan aún más este proceso al otorgar espacio a las personas y grupos que lo necesitan. Las cocinas comunales no solo unen a las personas, sino que brindan la oportunidad de iniciar nuevas empresas comerciales o alimentar a los tomadores de decisiones en los ayuntamientos.

mediante el subsidio cruzado del alquiler en combinación con el alquiler con opción a compra de unidades, esperamos detener el desplazamiento que ya se está produciendo en el vecindario. Es urgente que establezcamos más propiedad comunitaria y control democrático de la vivienda en Los Ángeles.
